Beloved LGBTQ+ hangouts, long-running events, and meaningful institutions await you everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this blog, we\u2019ve listed down restaurants with queer history, some of the city\u2019s many LGBTQ+ events, and even a museum dedicated to being non-binary. Some for their history, and others simply because of their welcoming vibe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Chokladkoppen<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the heart of Gamla Stan, Stockholm\u2019s old town, you\u2019ll find the first cafe to proudly wave the rainbow flag. Back then, there were barely any openly LGBTQ+ spaces in the city, and Chokladkoppen became a spot that was created by and for the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the cafe remains a hub for the community\u2014you\u2019ll find notices about queer events and can even grab a free copy of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qx.se\/english\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a popular LGBTQ+ magazine in Scandinavia. Drop by after your internship for a cozy cup of hot chocolate and one of their famous cinnamon buns!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>M\u00e4larpaviljongen<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years after opening Chokladkoppen, owners Arto Winter and Anders Karlsson created another safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community\u2014this time by the water, and open only during Stockholm\u2019s warm summer season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Described by Winter as a \u201cfloating garden,\u201d M\u00e4larpaviljongen is the perfect spot to enjoy a classic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studyinsweden.se\/blogs\/2023\/12\/01\/fika-culture-in-sweden-and-why-its-super-important\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swedish fika<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a hearty lunch, or wind down with dinner and drinks as the sun sets. If you\u2019re feeling extra adventurous, you can even take a dip in the lake!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Secret Garden<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another spot tucked in the charming streets of Gamla Stan is The Secret Garden, a restaurant and bar that\u2019s twice been named \u201cGay Place of the Year\u201d by QX Magazine. It\u2019s a cozy, colorful hangout spot known for its laidback vibe where everyone\u2019s welcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from great food and drinks, The Secret Garden regularly hosts themed events. Whether you\u2019re doing a summer internship in Stockholm or heading over during the fall, these are some of the happenings you won\u2019t want to miss!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cinema Queer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held every September, Cinema Queer is Sweden\u2019s biggest international LGBTQ+ film festival. It was founded in 2012, with a goal of diversifying the local cinema scene and offering more inclusive options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The festival highlights films that challenge norms, spark important conversations, and shed light on LGBTQ+ stories and experiences. It\u2019s one of Stockholm\u2019s most anticipated queer events of the year, as it brings together artists, activists, and allies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re completing a Winter internship in Stockholm, even if you don\u2019t get to attend the gala itself, you\u2019ll definitely feel its buzz all over the city. It\u2019s always fun to tune in online, too, and see which queer culture items\u2014a song, movie, TV star, or local hangout\u2014take home the awards!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Stockholm Pride<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, we wouldn\u2019t miss the local Pride celebration! Considered as the biggest LGBTQ+ event in Scandinavia, Stockholm Pride takes over the city every July and August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the iconic parade, you\u2019ll find Pride Park\u2014the heart of the festival\u2014with its exciting booths, live performances, and community hangouts. There\u2019s an entrance fee for Pride Park, but it\u2019s absolutely worth the experience! Here are a couple of other things worth checking out while you\u2019re here:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>QX<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, we\u2019ve mentioned QX several times already, but it definitely deserves its own spot here. As the largest LGBTQ+ magazine in the Nordics, QX has been a staple in the community for years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not just a magazine\u2014QX is a full-blown publishing house. They run the annual GayGala, organize other community events, and keep a website that\u2019s basically the go-to guide for queer happenings in Stockholm and all of Sweden.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Unstraight Museum<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We would describe The Unstraight Museum as a unique online and traveling museum. It\u2019s a non-profit that collects LGBTQ+ narratives from all over the world, and aims to make them more accessible to everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s not a physical museum based in Stockholm\u2014though that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their dream!\u2014its official address is registered in the city, which makes it a small but meaningful part of the local LGBTQ+ scene.
